LG’s G5 Is A Technological Wonder To Behold

Thanks to human ingenuity, the everyday gadgets that we use have advanced by leaps and bound since their inception just a few decades ago. The price of a computer whose performance is acceptable for a large section of population has come down dramatically. While it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the performance of desktops and laptops has plateaued, there are still some crazy innovation and advancement going on in the mobile space.
This year at Mobile World Congress, in full swing right now, LG has upped the mobile game to a whole new level. The mobiles from almost every major manufacturer, including LG, were nothing more than iterative improvements on the previous year models. But this time around, LG has decided to change that and it has definitely managed that with the G5.

Everything is about change

The predecessors of G5 – the G4 and G3 – were quite a success story for the company. But instead of keeping the same old design, LG decided to not only change the design but also change the customer’s perceptions about what makes a really good mobile. Enter G5: a mobile handset that is nothing like anything that we have seen before.

The Design

LG has ditched the old design language in the favor of a new, unibody, metal design that is quite attractive. With G5, LG has decided to take a step back from the ever increasing size of the screens on our mobile devices and have decided to stick with a 5.3 inch IPS LCD panel. The reduction in the screen size results in a more comfortable size and ergonomics and makes for a handset that is easy to use even with a single hand.

In addition to the new design, LG has decided to go with a two camera setup on the back of the phone. While there are two modules on the back – an 8MP and a 16 MP shooter -LG isn’t going for any gimmicks this time around. In fact, the two camera modules provide different field of view with the 8MP sensor having a mindblowing 135 degree camera angle. LG has also moved the volume rocker from the back to the side – a much more normal placement.

The Internals

The G5 is a very powerful beast. LG has opted for Snapdragon 820 – a quad core CPU that can deliver high end performance. The powerful CPU is coupled with 4GB of RAM, more than enough for all the multitasking needs out there. There is LTE onboard so blazing internet speeds are guaranteed. Connectivity is through Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC.

LG G5 comes with a USB Type C connector. What that means is that charging the mobile or copying something to it with be quite fast. There is 32GB of storage onboard and the battery comes in at 2800mAh.

LG G5’s Friends

The thing that makes this mobile phone stand out from the rest is the removable slot at the bottom of the set. This removable slot not only hosts the battery – which makes the battery user replaceable – but this slot can be used for attaching multiple accessories to G5 which LG has dubbed as Friends.

One of the Friends of G5 is an external camera grip. It has a dedicated camera button and a button to record video. This accessory also has a scroll wheel for zooming. Not only that, this particular Friend can boost the battery of the handset by almost 1200 mAh. So you can shoot all the photos and videos that you want without having to worry about your battery life.

Another accessory that LG is releasing with the G5 is a B&O’s high quality DAC and amp. Simply put, when you plug it into your mobile, the G5 can deliver high quality sound. If you are an audiophile then this is just something that you can’t live without.
